Nissan is recalling over 854,000 cars due to issues with the brake lights. The recall affects the 2016-2019 model years Nissan Sentras.
The car company said that a buildup of silicon-based grease can cause a switch near the brake pedal to malfunction and result in the brake light not turning on when the pedal is pressed. In some cases, the issue also prevented the car’s engine from starting. Nissan said there have not been any reports of accidents or injuries due to the issue.
It is unknown if any drivers were pulled over or received a ticket for having a faulty brake light as a result of the problem.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that Nissan will mail out notices to owners. Nissan expects to have the parts on hand to fix the issue. Dealers will replace the switch and install a protective grommet free of charge.
